How to Choose Your Cycling Tour Difficulty Easy, moderate or challenging — an honest guide to finding the right level
Choosing the wrong difficulty is the most common planning mistake. Too easy and you're bored; too hard and you're suffering. This guide gives you concrete benchmarks so you can pick the right level with confidence.
The Three Difficulty Levels Explained
Easy
Suitable for everyone- Daily distance: 30–55 km
- Daily elevation: Under 300 m total
- Terrain: Flat or gently rolling, mostly paved
- Daily riding time: 2–4 hours
Suitable for: Anyone who can ride a bicycle. No regular cycling required. People returning to cycling after years away. Families with children aged 8+.
Example routes: Danube (Passau–Vienna), Vienna–Budapest, Morava River Trail
Moderate
Weekend cyclists- Daily distance: 50–75 km
- Daily elevation: 300–600 m total
- Terrain: Rolling hills, mix of paved and gravel
- Daily riding time: 3–5 hours
Suitable for: Regular recreational cyclists who ride on weekends. Some preparation recommended (4–6 weeks of regular cycling before departure).
Example routes: Prague–Vienna (Czech section), Prague–Dresden (Elbe), Prague–Krakow
Challenging
Experienced cyclists- Daily distance: 70–100+ km
- Daily elevation: 600–1,200 m total
- Terrain: Significant hills, off-road sections
- Daily riding time: 4–7 hours
Suitable for: Experienced cyclists who ride regularly (3+ times per week). Should be comfortable with long days in the saddle and sustained climbs.
Example routes: Prague–Berlin, Prague–Munich, Iron Curtain Trail
How to Assess Your Own Level
The most honest self-assessment: can you do this right now, without preparation?
Can you ride 30 km on a flat path without stopping?
→ If yes → Easy tours are suitable for you right now.
Can you ride 50 km with some hills in a day?
→ If yes → Moderate tours are suitable for you.
Can you ride 70+ km with 600 m of climbing?
→ If yes → Challenging tours are an option.
Do you have knee or joint problems?
→ Consider an e-bike regardless of fitness level — it protects knees on longer days.
When in doubt, go one level easier than you think you need. You can always push harder than planned — but you can't make a hard route easy once you're on it. An e-bike is always a good insurance policy.
E-Bikes Lower the Difficulty by One Level
E-bikes are available on all our tours and are genuinely transformative. An e-bike with pedal-assist makes a moderate tour feel like an easy one — the climbs that would leave you exhausted on a regular bike are simply manageable with electric assist.
E-bikes are particularly recommended for: cyclists over 60, anyone with knee problems, couples where one partner is significantly fitter than the other, and anyone tackling their first multi-day tour. Cost: approximately €100–€180 per week extra.
