Wine trails and iron curtain roads

7 Days/6 Nights, 248km/15miles, EASY/MODERATE

If you are a wine lover, admirer of beautiful landscape and ancient history, then this bike tour in the Czech Republic is the right one for you! On this wine tour around Czech Republic, we will get to the most famous wine regions of Austria and of the Czech Republic, where the wine making tradition runs for almost two thousand years. We will peak into the lives of local wine producers in picturesque villages, which always have two centers – the residential and the wine making one. We will have a chance to familiarize with the process of wine making from planting of the grapevine all the way to the final product. In addition, every evening you will have a chance to taste and to compare samples of exceptional wines of both regions along with specialties of local cuisines! This wine tour around Czech Republic runs through a scenic, slightly hilly countryside full of vineyards and beautiful nature! While biking on border roads between Czech republic and Austria it is hard to believe, that this wonderful landscape was less than 25 years ago the so called no mans land and a death zone, dividing free world from the Communistic Eastern block by monstrous iron curtain. Even today, if you look carefully you will find traces of this recent history! Among the highlights of this entire tour will definitely be a visit of centers of European cultural centers, royal residential towns packed with historical sites – cities of Prague and Vienna!

The biggest advantage of this tour is that it is the most flexible from our offer. It offers many optional shortcuts or extra kms that gives you the great freedom to decide yourself almost every day according to the current weather conditions or amount of wine the other day, whether you choose longer or shorter trail.

Day 1 – Arrival to Prague

Description of the day: Arrival to Prague, check-in to hotel. This day is up to you to explore Prague by yourselves, relax or have a unique Prague by bike tour (see more in Prague by bike section). The tour is guided by Prague born guides who truly love the city and will show you much more than Lonely Planet highlights and moreover – all of it done by bike and finished by a mug of good beer in carefully chosen place. Do not hesitate to ask us for this extra tour – it is the most beloved one of our clients! If time is not your worst enemy, we do propose to stay in Prague more days to fully explore the beautiful spots and hidden corners of it. Please do not hesitate to ask us for more nights or other attractions!

Day 2 – Transport to Moravia - Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape

Distance: 30 km / 19 miles

Description of the day: In the morning, we will be transferred to South Moravia by car (3.5 hours). We will spend all day exploring the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape – a castle complex which used to belong to the family of Lichtenstein. Under the care of this single family, the swampy area was transformed into a well thought out combination of castles and parks, sometimes also called “The Garden of Europe” or “The Garden Paradise”. We will have a chance to visit this place, which combines both indigenous and exotic natural elements in order to create an outstanding work of human creativity. Since the complex is very large, bike is a recommended mode of transportation that allows you to experience this exceptional cultural site along with a good workout. Be in a botanical garden, wine tasting of the awarded best wines of Czech Republic in Chateau wine cellar in Valtice or a visit of one of many salems makes this day highlight of the whole wine tour around Czech Republic!

Day 3 – Podluzi wine region loop

Distance: 62 km / 35 miles

Description of the day: This bike tour in Czech Republic will lead us through wide open plains of the winemaking region of Podluzi with picturesque villages, wine cellars and friendly people along the newly created Czech-Slovak boarders. On the way, we will visit largest wine cellar village in Velke Bilovice, solemnly wine cellar village Nechory, ancient Slavic settlement in Mikulčice, as well as the beautiful Pohansko Castle, and the town of Breclav. We will conclude this day by arriving back to the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape.

If you would like to add some kilometers, why do not visit Slovakia for a short time!

Day 4 – Nove Mlyny Water Dam – Pavlov – Mikulov

Distance: 50 km / 31 miles

Description of the day: This day will start off by a bike tour through Czech Republic in the peaceful region of the Dyje River towards the Nove Mlyny Water Dam. A small town of Pavlov will be our first stop. This town is “guarded” by Devin – a castle ruin which is located above the town. While some will be enjoying a break in a local restaurant, others can climb up to the ruins to enjoy an amazing view. After that, we will continue through the village of Dolni Vestonice, which is very well known due to a rare archeological find of a small woman statue that is 23 000 years old! To get to our final destination of the day – the town of Mikulov – we will ride through the vineyard region and around the Palava Hills. Mikulov will welcome us with its Baroque castle with a wine museum, an old synagogue and a local curiosity – a giant wine cask.

Day 5 – Mikulov – Laa an der Thaya

Distance: 59 km / 39 miles

Description of the day: This day will be our first one in Austria so this wine tour around Czech Republic can’t be called like that anymore. We will get on the wine bike path, which bears the name after the most famous wine cultivar – it is called the Veltlinska Bike Path. This path will take us through a slightly hilly terrain and, from the distance, we will be called by the Falkenstein castle ruins, which is the dominant of the entire region. Adjunct vineyards region is one the most beautiful in this area. From the castle ruins, we will continue through the Herrnbaumgarten Village, which is famous for its poetic museum of non-senses, all the way to wine museum in Poysdorf, where you will have a chance to learn everything you did not know about wine so far! After passing the Staatz castle ruins, we will be already in our final destination for the day – a spa town of Laa an der Thaya. Here we will be able to admire two town halls, ruins of a castle and, most importantly, to taste the great local wines!

Day 6 – Laa an der Thaya – Znojmo

Distance: 62 km / 38 miles

Description of the day: On this last bike day, we will follow the main bike route of the entire region to the West, all the way to the village of Hadres, where we will visit the most beautiful wine street of the entire region. It is 1.6 km long and there are more than 400 cellars along it. Retz, an old-time wine town, is only a skip away from Hadres. In Retz, we will have a chance to admire not only an interesting main square, but primarily 20 km-long labyrinth of wine cellars, which holds five million liters of this godly drink! Just north of Retz, we will pass an old windmill and then we will return back to the Czech Republic and enjoy the rest of the bike tour in Czech Republic. A beautifully painted wine cellar, well-preserved fortification from World War II and many other small sights will be on our “to visit list” in the center of this wine region – the town of Znojmo. Just before entering Znojmo, we can turn to the Podyji National Park and our reward will be magnificent – an unforgettable view of the Sobes vineyard, which supposedly is located in the highest altitude of all vineyards in Europe!

Day 7 – Vienna (Austria)

Description of the day: In the morning, transport by car/train for the city of waltz, opera and famous Vienna coffee. The capital city of Austria will be our final destination of this wine tour around Czech Republic but also around Austria. We strongly recommend extending your stay in Vienna by at least one day, because the UNESCO protected city center, the Schönbrunn Castle and many other sights are too beautiful and unique to be missed. We can arrange accommodation and tour guiding services for you, as well as possible transport back to Prague.
